Fun Facts The Club by Joshua - September 2019 Scholarship Essay
If I were to create an extracurricular activity, it would be one where students would share anything interesting that they found out, This could as short as a simple fun fact or as complex as the student and the coordinator wants to go.
A reason that I think that this would be beneficial to students is that it teaches communication skills. A way to improve communication skills and learning comprehension is being able to effectively teach a subject as shown in a 1982 meta-analysis where students had to act as tutors towards other students in a school tutoring program. In that analysis, it was shown that they had a greater comprehension of the subject. In the same meta-analysis, it was shown that the student tutors also showed a greater appreciation for the subject. Since this improves communication skills which is a skill needed for many 21st century workplaces it would greatly benefit the individuals involved.
Another reason why this club could be beneficial is that it could help inspire passions or career choices. Since students would be encouraged to explore their passion it could ignite a realization of a potential career path. This could give students a direction for their career sooner than just having them figuring it out on their own which is enormously beneficial. Since one has a limited amount of time in high school to not only choose a career path, they also have to choose how they’re going to go about it. If one can find a career path within their first or second year then they can spend the remainder of the time to solidify how they’re going to go about the path as opposed to only being able to spend only a year or two to get the specifics instead of potentially three or four years.
