Ag Classes in School by Josey - November 2021 Scholarship Essay

Being a small town farm kid you might expect an answer like this from me but I truly believe that agriculture based classes need to be emphasized in more schools. Too many kids grow up outside of the agriculture world and do not get the chance to learn where their food, clothing, and other necessities come from. I feel that this information is very important for all people to learn about, especially at a young age. When kids can learn where their food comes from they will be able to appreciate the people that put so much time and energy into creating everyday goods.

How can emphasizing agriculture classes affect kids in the future? Recently there have been several new laws and policies as well as controversy affecting the agriculture industry. The laws and policies will affect everyone from the largest farm to a person who has nothing to do with the industry. If people are not informed then they may not be able to fully understand how this will affect them and the people who work to make all the food and clothing used around the world. If people do not understand then they may not be able to make a vote that will help them. These events are obviously a ways down the road but they are things that will affect everyone.

Another reason why agriculture classes are important for kids to have is because these classes teach everyday skills that all people use. Through agriculture classes you can learn things like: business, animal health, public speaking, communications, etc. Programs like FFA are often offered through different agriculture courses. FFA offers opportunities for students to travel, try new things, and compete against other students from all over the country. Through these classes and programs you are able to make connections with people from several different industries and career paths. These life skills are something that can help students throughout the rest of their lives.

Agriculture is something that is very important in our world and should be in the classroom. Learning about where our food and other necessities come from should be a priority in school. Informing students about the different ways that agriculture impacts as well as teaching them life skills will help prepare them for the future. My involvement in agriculture courses has helped me to better understand where things come from as well as help prepare me for the future.
