What is the most valuable lesson you've learned in high school and why? by Joseph - November 2013 Scholarship Essay

When the soccer season first began this year, I had my doubts about our team. We had lost 13 seniors, most of whom were the starters for our team. I knew I was not alone with my doubts, because during one of our first practices, it was evident that the team as a whole was unmotivated, and did not believe they had a chance to win this year. And it was during that practice that I learned the most important lesson in my life.

Our coach has been coaching the school’s soccer team for longer than I have been alive, and he told us flat out, that, “I don’t care what you guys do, but you will NOT be the ones to destroy the legacy that has been created here. So if you are not here to give your all, then I want you to leave!” His words sparked me with inspiration to work harder, not just in sports, but also in my schoolwork.

But then our team in a scrimmage to a team that we could have easily won, and we had another speech from Coach. He looked at every one of us in the eyes, and said “Look at you. You are young and healthy, and you are blessed with the gift to play soccer in this great world. Not everyone has the chance to do what you do. You are blessed with the gift of life, and right now you are just throwing it away like trash! Now wake up, and you can make miracles happen!” And it was with that speech that I learned to value my life. I saw my life not as a right, but a gift that I am to use for greatness.

And miracles did happen. We were the team that everyone thought would be terrible, we were believed to be going through a rebuilding year, and everyone doubted that we could win anything. Except for myself, our coach, and the entire team. Our soccer team went on to be undefeated in our league, ranked first in the sectional playoffs, and we are currently on pace to becoming the state champions. Even when everyone doubted us, we found a way to overcome and thrive.

I learned this year that anything is possible as long as you believe in yourself. My coach has also taught me the importance of life, and to not take it for granted. And if I want to achieve something in my life, I cannot wait for it to show up at my door; I need to go out, work hard, and get it.
