Education is People Helping People" by Joseph - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

Today the world is filled with people who are in rough situations. People have become uneducated, poor, and sick. It is very concerning that there are high numbers of people out there that have to face these terrible circumstances. Luckily there are great opportunities to help these people. We have programs in our society that provide those that live in poverty with education, shelter, food, and care. There are programs that allow students from poverty attend school, Pre School, and even college. We have hospitals solely dedicated to helping ill children get the support they need to come out stronger than ever. The people who are helping these people are heroes. President Lyndon B. Johnson founded the program Head Start to ensure that children at the time they learn the most receive an education, that program exists to this day. Johnson said “Today we are able to announce that we will have open, and we believe operating this summer, coast-to-coast, some 2,000 child development centers serving as many as possibly a half million children.” He was a revolutionary to the education system, he like none before saw the true purpose of education, helping others. Mother Theresa, the missionary once said, “We think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless. The poverty of being unwanted, unloved and uncared for is the greatest poverty. We must start in our own homes to remedy this kind of poverty.” What she meant was that we as human beings need to tap into our care for others and start helping in any way that we can. Danny Thomas, the founder of Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital once said, “Success has nothing to do with what you gain in life or accomplish for yourself. It's what you do for others.” Thomas believed that we as human beings are obliged to help those who need the help. Our society has done countless things to help better the lives of strangers, and ask for nothing in return. We are not a greedy people; we in our hearts and mind are kind and caring people. In every person there is a Lyndon Johnson, a Mother Theresa, a Danny Thomas we just have to find it from within.

The purpose of education is people helping people. That is why I have decided to become a teacher myself. Last year when I was unsure of my future I could think of many different things I could do, but only one appealed to my mind and conscience, teaching. I want to help students one day find their paths in life, to teach them about the times I know and love. I want to change as many lives as possible, and I think education is the best way to change lives. People Helping People has been a sure thing throughout history why can’t it be a sure thing in our future. I know I will be one to help any person I encounter. If I can change just one persons life through education I’d say my life mattered.
