The Most Ignored Department by Jordyn - December 2014 Scholarship Essay
When asked the question, how has education shaped who you are today, I immediately think back to my history classes in high school. When most people are asked about their history classes, they do not think of fond memories. They think of dates, wars, acts, and cases that they hated memorizing and hated being tested on even more. Most people take the bare minimum requirements, two humanities classes needed in order to graduate, and some of friends were even surprised to hear that our university even had a humanities department, let alone that someone would actually choose to make history their major.
My history classes, and especially the impressive department that taught them, are the educational influence that has shaped me into the person I am today. These teachers have helped me too realize how much I enjoy history, and those classes have taught me how history is so significant in today’s times. Those are the people that taught me that just because many people dislike something, does not mean that you should pretend you do not like it, just to go along with the crowd. Those same classes have taught me to think about situations in different ways in order to understand others’ views. They have taught me that learning about other cultures and societies help one to grow as a person.
