Leadership by Jordan - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Thank you for the opportunity to apply for this scholarship. To me, being a leader is having a wide variety of different traits that will set good examples to those students at East Buchanan that are younger than me and also help myself promote good leadership. Being a student that works hard to be on the honor roll, and having skills that I can share with others helps me be a better role model. Having others look up to me as a good example is one way to show that I am a good leader. Another skill that shows a good leader includes being an open-minded, patient person that demonstrates an ability to get along with many different types of people whether it is on a team, or on more of an individual basis. Good character is also something I feel fits in well with being a good leader. Trying to demonstrate good character in everything that I do, whether it is at work, school, during extracurricular activities, and in additional times outside of school is something I expect of myself. Some good characteristics that I try to show are being supportive of the efforts and attitudes of my peers, showing confidence in the activities I am involved in and the work I do academically, volunteering for projects, and listening with respect and acceptance to others’ opinions.

Looking at leadership as a whole I see three qualities you need to have to be a good leader; drive to execute, ability to relate, and integrity. Good leaders want to make a difference and accomplish something. Whether that difference is something in your community or in your academics you may need others to assist you. When in college you will be doing group projects, to produce a quality project you need to be able to relate to your group members, whether you agree with their opinion or not. To me, you cannot be a good leader without integrity. If you have strong morals, college will be much easier for you.
