My Definition of Success In College
By Jordan Holland

I do not believe that graduating college defines someone as successful, but I believe it can help achieve a level of success. In the same way, wealth does not define success, it is often a result of a successful business. Even without a degree, a business can be built and a become a financial success with hard work, luck, and wisdom. Based on my families experience this may be accomplished faster with a degree.

Although my mother never earned a degree, she has been asked to teach business classes at the local college. She explained to me that the topics she spoke on took her years to learn but the students in the class were able to learn much of it in a one-hour class. Her input helped me to see the value of a college education. I hope to earn a business degree and have the opportunity to play college sports. These are my goals. Simply working towards and accomplishing goals will helps build confidence, character, and discipline. I also expect achieving these goals will expedite my financial success.

In the job market having a degree improves my ability to gain employment. A degree is currently a prerequisite for over 80% of the jobs I find interesting. If I chose to join a branch of the military, a college degree allows me to start at a higher position and higher rate of pay. Graduating with a degree is definitely a mark of success in college.

I understand that many students start college with a degree in mind and then switch majors, sometimes more than once. Many people will graduate with a specific degree and pursue a completely different field of work. Regardless, a college degree allows for many more opportunities.

For me, success in college will include several goals. I want this to be a time in my life where I play college sports, build friendships, make great memories, and earn a degree. I am hoping for enough scholarship funding and work during the summer, to keep education debt down to a minimum. Completing four years of college and accomplishing these goals will be my personal definition of success in college.
