Females in the Future of Film by Jordan - June 2020 Scholarship Essay

I hope to venture into the field of film. The moving image amazes me. I enjoy creating, watching, and analyzing films. However, the film industry is somewhat intimidating. Hollywood stars, powerful directors, and a digital world. As I begin to pursue a degree in Film Studies in the Fall, I want to later obtain a job in the industry, possibly as a Director, Cinematographer, or Editor. I not only want to reach my personal goals by achieving this career, but I also want to bring about change in the field as a whole.
If you think of the film industry, you imagine big names like Spielberg or Tarantino. Or maybe you watch the Oscars awards show and see the recipients of awards primarily being male. Although they are amazing directors, or talented workers, it is harder to think of a female director or member of the industry. I am hoping to change that. The film industry is male-dominated. As a female, I bring new perspectives, ideas, and experiences. Within recent years, the ‘Me Too’ movement has brought sexual assault to the light, especially within the film industry. I hope that I can help bring change by creating a safer environment for females as well as increasing female representation. Although this may take time, and I would not be able to make this change alone, it is still an important goal to reach for.
Although I cannot predict what the future has in store, I hope to bring about change in my intended career field, by increasing female representation in the film industry. I hope that there are more females in the future of film.
