The Importance of On-Campus Jobs by Jordan - November 2014 Scholarship Essay
During my time in college, I have discovered a bunch of tricks on how to be a successful college student. Some of these include obvious things like don’t procrastinate and to take good notes in class, but the best piece of advice I can think of giving to an incoming high school freshman is to get as many on-campus jobs as you can throughout your time in college.
My first on-campus job was one of my favorites: a tutor in the college’s learning center. This job had so many benefits. Being my very first job, I was excited to have a source of income to help with costs such as books, rent, transportation, and other typical college student needs. But money wasn’t the main benefit of this job. That went to meeting all the awesome people.
I met so many people and made many friends through my time at the learning center. Being in such a position, people would come to where I work from all over the campus for help. Meeting all these people taught me how diverse the world really was.
My next on-campus job would come a couple years later: a student assistant in the university’s news department. Just like the tutor job, I got to meet many people, except most of the people I met weren’t college students; they were career professionals. Since I was working in the news division, I always new what was happening on campus. By working on-campus at a university, I learned what the world really was: a bunch of businesses working together to solve the problems of the world.
I hope that, by reading this, you realize the importance of getting as many on-campus jobs as you can. You will be exposed to many things that you will be able to reflect on later in life. The experiences from working on campus will change the way you look at the world.
