High School is Your Job! by John - November 2014 Scholarship Essay
The best advice I could give to a freshman or lower class-men is: do whatever you need to do you to get good grades. Grades are more important than you realize. Sometimes kids their age do not care enough to try in school. They need to understand that high school is a full time job as and should be taken as seriously as any other profession. The grades you receive now will earn you scholarship money and perks when you are preparing for college. Lower class-men should treat their school days as if it is a job, not an option. If you are serious about going to college, you need to earn a high GPA every semester. The higher your GPA is, the easier the college application process will be. If you take your high school career seriously, you will be able to go to the college you want and life will generally be easier. When I was their age, I was still figuring out who I was. I focused more on the social aspects of high school because I wanted to be “cool” and I wanted people to like me. I think that mind set is common among most freshmen. I should have been completely focused on my school work but instead I cared more about how I was perceived than my grades. Not that my grades were bad, but they could have been better if I kept my priorities straight. I didn't figure any of this out until my junior year.
Setting goals and staying organized is the key. Plan out when you are going to finish all of your assignments. If you do not understand how to do something, do not be afraid to ask for help. You can never make the decision to just give up or not do your work. Remember to write down every assignment you receive from your teachers, and make note of when you finish something. Keeping track of your assignments will make things more clear and will make you able to complete work faster.
The internet is your friend. Use it to your advantage. When you don't understand an assignment, chances are the answer will be somewhere one the internet. You just have to know how to search for things correctly. If the obstacle keeping you from completing an assignment is a directional issue, do not be afraid to email the teacher. Keep all papers given to you because many of them will be helpful later on. Keep every graded assignment that is given back to you. Teachers are human and they occasionally make mistakes. Holding on to your work can save you in the event that they lose or do not enter your grade. This relates back to what I said about being organized.
In conclusion, remember to not focus on social aspects of high school. Those things are fun and are not negatives by any means, but they cannot be your priority. Take each assignment given to you seriously. Every grade is important and contributes to you accumulative GPA. Stay organized and keep track of all assignments given too you. It is your responsibility to learn what the teacher is teaching you, so learn!
