Study Process by John - January 2014 Scholarship Essay
My most effective study method is a process. After school, I feel kind of burned out from all the work I’ve done, so I take a break from it and go for a run. Running calms me down and lets me think about what I need done and how to do it. Running also serves as my outlet for the energy I built up throughout the day when I can’t be active. By the time I’m finished with my run and I get home, I am ready to hit the books again. I’m relaxed and am able to sit still and focus on my work. This way, I can get more done and be more effective. Now, it is understandable that not everyone has time for, or even wants to run after school (my own friends all think I’m crazy). However, even just walking home from school can be enough physical activity to get some energy out and help get you in the mood to be able to work.
Another study technique I use is known in psychology as “spacing.” Spacing is when you study and then take a break before studying again. The brain remembers material better if it is reviewed at intervals, as opposed to cram sessions deep into the night. I try to study in intervals, and when I do, I definitely notice a difference in my success on related tests or quizzes. I use spacing especially when I have a lot of formulas or vocabulary to memorize. I have been able to improve my scores on math and language tests by doing this. While this technique is helpful no matter what you are studying, I have found it to work best for lists of information.
My study method has been very beneficial for me, especially in my German or Government and Politics classes. By studying my notes and handouts on a regular basis, I am able to increase the amount of information I can retain and recall. This has helped me raise my test grades and understand the class better. I have been able to pass my AP tests and get good scores on core and standardized testing by using it.
