Conditional Importance of College by Joel - April 2020 Scholarship Essay

College is a great stepping stone into a fruitful future, a dreary career, or lifelong debt. No doubt college has its upsides in the long run, but that may not always be the case. Depending on what a person seeks to do in their life, college may or may not be important.

People who seek a career in a STEM field may find college to be of great importance. College is a gateway into further education and gives the opportunity of applying the learning. Careers where college is important are law, medicine, engineering, business, and so much more. But college may not be important right away in a career, but it is to further ones self in their respective career, for example, in the military or store and restaurant chains. The importance of college may be either to get started in a career, or to send yourself forward into a career.

College may not be as important if a persons career path is more technical. People such as mechanics, welders, roofers, and electricians may find it more profitable to pursue their trade and hone their skills rather than go to college.

Though, for some, college may not be the best idea. For one reason, they may get a degree that is difficult to find a job for and find themselves in debt. Or worse, they are unsure what they want to do with their life, go to college, but never get a degree, jumping from one subject to another and wind up dropping out with nothing to take away except debt. In their case, hopefully there comes a time where they know what they want in life and are able to utilize college to their advantage to bring themselves up and forward in life.

Personally, under my circumstance, I find college to be important for myself. Though I am in the National Guard, I seek to have a good military career base as well as a civilian career base so I can balance the two, and when the profitable opportunity arises, I can jump on one or the other, and when things cool down or if work is slow or not ideal, I can balance both. Attending college is also important to further myself in the military aspect of my life by giving me the opportunity to attend ROTC and later commission as an officer in the military. I find college good as a stepping stone for self and leadership development and a rung to life long learning.

The importance of college depends on a what a person pursues as a career. Some careers may require college to start, others require it to continue, others may not require college. These make the importance of college conditional. But as for myself, college is important because I want to further myself in the National Guard and set myself up for success as a civilian.
