I Believe College is Important by Joanna - April 2020 Scholarship Essay
I do believe that attending college is important, especially in our current society. However, I also feel that life experiences are important in life long learning that makes an individual proficient and knowledgeable in their field of study. Many characteristics of school- based learning can be completed on one's own with the use of the internet. However, college is necessary to teach and to test aptitude of a student's knowledge about the material needed to perform in a professional career.
As a graduate student in a nursing field that is very specialized in the care that we deliver, this is even more true. In nursing school we learn the basics of nursing care for the generalized population, including Adults, Pediatrics and Women’s Health, however nursing school does not prepare you for caring for neonates in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. There is so much to learn in this setting that there is a large basis of knowledge that needs to be incurred over several years for a new nurse coming on to a unit such as this. And for one of those nurses to then pursue a graduate level degree in the Neonatal Intensive Care, many years of nursing care should be completed.
As graduate nursing programs stand now, few require a minimum amount of years in the field of nursing prior to pursuing advanced education. However, I feel that this is not preparing strong practitioners in the workforce. Education, even at the advanced graduate level, provides a very strong foundation on which to build your knowledge basis. However, the key to be successful in graduate school for Advanced Practice Nurses, years of knowledge as a Registered Nurse is important. Therefore, I feel that education in the university setting is an important, if not a necessity for many careers, I do feel as though experience in life and in performing some job functions is also essential for making a well-rounded student in the classroom setting and a more prepared professional entering the workforce.
