How my education changed my future job by Jillian - June 2017 Scholarship Essay
When I was six year old I wanted to do many different things as I’m sure many young children wanted to, however, some of things I wanted to do was a little out there because I was so young and didn’t understand that some of those jobs were difficult for me to have. Some of the jobs were being a dancer, singer, musician, and also something involving animals; I was unsure of what I wanted to do but I know I wanted to do one if not all of those things when I grew up. A majority of children growing up want to have all types of jobs as they grow up.
When I was younger I was put into a lot of dance classes as well as talent shows for singing but as I grew up I slowly started to do much less of both of those and now I only sing for myself. I was personally a very quiet child unless you knew me very well and for the longest time I kept the hope of doing at least one of those four jobs. When I got into middle school I started to read a lot more as well as take a bigger interest in drawing as well as science. Throughout middle school I started to question the job route I wanted to take later on in life and I ended up taking off becoming a dancer but then adding several more other jobs I’d like to take part of.
When I got to high school, my freshmen year, we began to take a lot of surveys to tell us which jobs we may be good at and it made me rethink some things about the new jobs I looked into; during the summer after my freshmen year I volunteered at the vet in my community watching surgeries and helping with after care as well as sit in on clients. I personally found volunteering in a career I wanted very eye opening as well as very rewarding because it made me realize I could actually see myself in that career set. In my personal life I also had a lot of things going on that made me think I would like a job as a lawyer or something similar.
When I got to my sophomore year I started to slowly go deeper into the jobs I wanted and I found out a lot more about marine biologist, zoologists, veterinarians, lawyers, musicians, and artist. I looked into many factors, for example, how much schooling I would need to go through, how much I believe I would enjoy the job, if I would get the job after I finish schooling, how much money I would get paid after each degree, and so much more. As I was going through all my research I realized how much artist and musicians struggle with making it but I know if I ever got the opportunity to do music or art I would take it, however, it doesn’t mean if I did choose another job route I couldn’t do those things in my free time.
During this year, my junior year, I have been looking into those jobs a lot more because very soon I hope to get accepted into a college in Tennessee and I would like to have a better idea of what job I hope to major in; at this moment I am undecided however I am leaning towards marine biology or zoology. Deciding what your future job is can be very challenging as well as intimidating because it’s your future and if you only have one chance to go to college and you choose a major you won’t be happy in, it could ruin a lot of things for you. I hope as I finish out my senior year I have an even better understanding of what I hope to major in and be less intimidated by something that is not a final decision.
