Leadership Skills in College by Jessie - March 2015 Scholarship Essay
Just like playing on a football team or even in a group project at work, there has to be a leader or someone with leadership skills. These skills are important throughout life, and as we grow older we tend to develop more skills and make the skills we have already learned better. Everyone needs help at some point in their life, people will struggle with certain criteria but if someone is able to communicate and have an open minded, the world would have less chaos which allows people to work and study to the best of their abilities.
While being a leader, a person must have confidence in themselves. Being unsure or having doubts can make things stressful and more chaotic than what the situation needs to be. People within the group need that one person who can push them to become a better person or a better student, even if it just to pass one test. Having that one person can make someone feel less stressed about a situation while becoming more confident in them as time goes on.
Leadership skills show other people that a person is independent and reliable. This allows anyone who has a problem or ideas to be able to express themselves with confidence that they will be heard. Being an open minded person with the idea of doing what is best for anyone within the group or the college is very important. A leader does not concede in just them because they know that someone else will be affected by the results of whatever the situation might be.
A leader is willing to take risks and make mistakes unlike many people but stay very strong to what they think is best for the group or college is a tough task to handle at times. Many people will not want to take risks simply because it could be wrong, but someone with leadership skills will be able to see that one of two things will most likely happen with a risk; either a lesson will be learned or they will see what a blessing a risk can be. There are many people who are just unable to see passed the fear of being wrong, unlike the leader.
Communication can be the one quality that can determine if someone can have leadership skills. If someone is unable to fully communicate with the group or with people within the school it can show other people a sign of selfishness or a sign of being unstable. Unfortunately, some people do not know how to ask for help or just simply cannot express themselves like most. If a leader cannot express what he or she means then chaos and bad situations can form. Communication is also a very good way for the leader to stand their ground when too many ideas are brought to the table or when someone isn’t keeping everyone else in mind. In group projects, there are always people who think their ideas are always right; granted the leader might not always have the best ideas but the leader is keeping their mind opened to any ideas that will do nothing but benefit the situation.
When it comes to college, leadership skills are crucial to succeed as a person and as a group. Without these skills it would be harder to do anything with in the walls of a classroom simply because you are your own leader. If someone cannot push themselves as a person, then I personally do not think they would be able to push someone else.
