Not Just a Mother, But Also an Inspiration by Jessica - September 2013 Scholarship Essay
A mother, herself is meant to be an inspiration though this is not always the case. Perhaps it might be a little cliche to state that my mother is my inspiration, but as a girl, I've realized how much of a strong woman figure my mother is, and how much of an effect she has really had on my life. However, my mother is not just the typical role model, but instead much more by being my academic role model as well. My mother grew up with three other siblings and it was hard for my grandmother because money was always tight. However, through these tough times, my mother was able to graduate high school early. Although she graduated high school early, she had to get get a job before actually being able to start college. She waited close to ten years before she went to college because of financial issues. Starting college in your thirties is probably really rough, having forgotten all the essential basic things learned in high school. However, she pushed through. During her last semester she had become pregnant with me. After that last semester she had to take a little respite from school for a while. She later reurned to school even with a child to take care of. Her goal was to receive her master's degree, and she worked extremely hard to reach that goal. Resourcefully, she had taped one of her charts to the cabinet above the sink so she could study while washing dishes. This was just one of the few paradigms of how she made her situation work for her. Seeing how my mother succeeded through adversity, makes me yearn to strive to be even better. Because of my mother, I know for sure that whatever major I pursue, I want to receive a master's degree in it. I cannot even fathom the difficulties of having a child and going to college. Even though I won't have to go through that adversity or at least I hope not, I just hope I can be as strong and ambitious as my mother on my journey through college and life.
