Do Not Be Afraid, You Were Born to Do This by Jessica - March 2015 Scholarship Essay
Leadership skills are a necessity in situations that may involve driving the English out of France in 1429 or organizing the menu for Senior Prom. However, unless you're Joan of Arc or President of the Prom Committee, leadership may be something that is not instinctively evident in your college career.
In theory, leadership is taking control of a situation or group in order to achieve a purpose. As it has been said before, with leadership comes responsibility. Taking on the role of a leader may appear challenging but it will ultimately improve one's self-confidence as well as their community involvement. A leader is aware of every outcome, and weighs every option in their mind before making the ultimate choice. In this sense, leadership is almost innate with the process of going to a higher education school.
As one grows older, commits themselves to an academic career, and ultimately decides on a college or university to pursue their education, they are faced with a variety of challenges. This is nothing as formidable as medieval English warriors or giving the entire senior class food poisoning, but to many the decision may seem like a nightmare. However, once the power has been accumulated, one can begin to extend their spectrum of leadership towards community projects and betterment of themselves.
College students need to be leaders of their own educational path. In order to reach one’s full potential; one needs to have control of their future. College is the beginning of a new experience, where before one has been taught to follow, abide, regulate, conform; in university, the freedom can often bring some to crash under pressure. Those who take control of themselves are often more comfortable with achievement and find success more steadily.
