Leadership Skills by Jessica - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Leadership skills are something that have been encouraged in students since the very beginning of time. When students are in elementary school all the way through high school they are inspired and encouraged to be leaders in their own personal environments. College, however, my require leadership skills for academic success. Education is a beautiful thing, but without the knowledge and power to utilize education, it may be wasted or lost. Leadership skills are important to have in college because they inspire confidence and independence, encourage others to do their best, and keep an individual both academically and mentally focused.

Confidence is, unfortunately, something that most people have to work quite hard for to acquire. Once confidence is attained, however, it provides a limitless amount of opportunities. Leadership and confidence go hand in hand because a leader must exude confidence in order to provide self-assurance and inspire others to trust their judgment. If a leader doubts themselves, then it is likely that they will shatter the idea that they are worthy of complete trust and social respect. Leadership skills inspire confidence because they allow the leader to trust their own instincts, which can carry over into so many other aspects of life. Confidence allows independence, to find acceptance in self and not in others, and to give one’s self the love and self-assurance that will take them incredibly far both mentally and academically.

One of the main qualities of a leader is being able to lead others, naturally. When a student is strong, confident, and intelligent it inspires others to work for the same personal traits. It can often be overlooked how much the personality of one affects so many others, but it is a very important quality that needs to be taken into consideration. Whether a leader knows it or not, they are a source of inspiration. People need to find desirable qualities in others in order to have goals to strive for, and leadership skills are contagious and hardly ever hamper the growth and development of anyone, be it mentally, physically, or emotionally. When others succeed, they inspire leadership skills even further, which helps promote the quality of living for everyone affected.

Focus is detrimental to a college student’s success. If a student does not completely and wholeheartedly apply one’s self to all of their academic responsibilities, then they are setting themselves up for mental stress and potential failure. Leadership skills assist in keeping up with assignments, because it encourages students to stay on task and keep up with their work, which can alleviate so many other factors that could hamper their academic and social lives.
Leadership skills are incredibly important in aiding a college student’s success. Without confidence, inspiration and focus, a student will find themselves in a difficult if not completely impossible hole to dig out of. Leadership skills not only help college students academically, but emotionally and physically as well. A healthy life begins with a healthy beginning, and college is the first step in anyone’s journey to a peaceful and ideal future, and leadership skills are what will allow others to become their absolute best as well.
