Our Future Is Behind Us by Jessica - November 2021 Scholarship Essay

All of our most important lessons in life can be learned from our past mistakes, and this is crucial to developing and maintaining a successful society moving forward. As the great philosopher George Santayana once said, "Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it," establishing our connection between current mistakes and disillusions with the familiar flaws of our ancestors. I believe that the answers to our sustained future lie in every history text book across America, and that our constant study and exploration to better understand what has happened before us will only guide us in our relentless search for a utopian society.
Our education system is failing us. We see our academic achievement's cultural value at an all time low, and as our once coveted educational infrastructure being manipulated by opinions and misinformation rather than measured with facts and science. During recent years we've seen questionable voting decisions and legislation proposed to bring us back to the unfortunate dark ages of our world's murky history. As a young woman of color, I am concerned about the future of the generations to come, and I genuinely believe that it is not only my job, but the responsibility and obligation of my own generation to lay the proper foundation for the future we've been fighting for for so long.
