The Importance of Education by Jessica - December 2014 Scholarship Essay

My education has everything to do with the person that I am today. The reason I am who I am today is because of the education that I have received. It has shaped me into the person that I have become in many different ways. Through my education I have developed important skills and qualities, met people who have been great influences in my life, and become prepared for college and the rest of my future.

One way that my education has shaped me into the person that I am today is through teaching me skills that are useful in my everyday life. Through my education I have learned to manage my time more wisely and to prioritize. I have learned to use the free-time that I have at school, such as study hall or my lunch period, to do my work instead of waiting until I get home. I have also taken my homework to volleyball games before, especially if the game was away, so I would not have stay up all night working on it when I got back home, but I have sacrificed sleep before as well. I have also learned that the things I have to do, like homework or studying, need to come before the things I want to do, which is hard to understand as a teenager, but I’ve adjusted to make it work. My education has taught me to be diligent, responsible, persistent, and self-disciplined. These skills and qualities are vital in the real world and I am beyond thankful to have acquired them early through my education.

Another way that my education has shaped me is through introducing me to certain people that I never would have met otherwise. All of my teachers have always been supportive of me in the classroom, but I have met some teachers in my high school years that have become more than just teachers to me. Many of them have become more like friends by being there for me during stressful situations. Because of this they are easily approachable and make me feel comfortable when asking or answering questions, even though I am a shy person. My teachers have given me support, strength, and confidence, which I have needed a great deal of over the years. They have pushed me hard as well, but only because they knew what I was capable of, and I could not be more grateful to them for showing me that because I did not know myself.

A final way that my education has shaped me is through preparing me for college and guiding me towards a successful future. This is particularly evident at the moment, as I am currently half-way through my senior year. Through high school I have always had a pretty heavy course load, but this year has been the most stressful since I am overloading my schedule as well. I am currently taking Calculus, Physics, and Anatomy & Physiology, which are dual credit classes. I am also enrolled in Honors English IV, Business Law, Accounting, Yearbook, and Physical Education. I am also involved in athletics, clubs, and organizations outside of school, so life is very hectic for me right now, but I have learned that I am able to balance it all even with my rigorous course load. It’s been stressful and hard to do, but I know that it will all pay off in the long run.

Out of everything that has contributed to the shaping of who I am today, my education has played the biggest role. Without it, I would not be where I am today. My education has helped me achieve some of my greatest skills and qualities, and has set me on the path to success.
