My Dream Job by Jessica - June 2017 Scholarship Essay

When I was young, people would ask the age-old question. So, what do you want to be when you grow up? My answer has always been pretty much been the same. Sure, at one point I thought it would be cool to be an engineer like my grandpa or a marine biologist because I liked sharks, but the most consistent answer that I have given since I was five or six years old is, “I want to go to college and then be an actress.” I have always liked school and since my parents didn’t go to college, I wanted to be the one who went. School has always been fun for me and I enjoy learning. People have always told me that I will make an excellent teacher one day because I am very good with kids, and it’s true. But it should come as no surprise that I want to be an actress.
Every year instead of sending out Christmas cards, my family would film our version of different classic Christmas stories and my siblings and I always acted in them. We would then post them on YouTube for friends and family to watch. The feedback we got was great! We made people laugh and cry and we got rave reviews. I learned that I really enjoyed making people happy with my acting skills.
In high school, I joined theater and under the direction and mentoring of my fantastic drama teacher, I was able to act in musicals, one-act plays and even direct my own play! It made me realize that this childhood dream I have is something that can be achieved. It is not the fame and fortune of the business that I am interested in, I want to be an actress to entertain the world and bring people together over the love of something I had a hand in creating. So after college, I am going to move to Los Angeles and try my hardest to make my dream become my reality.
In college, I am going to pursue a degree in education. My mom has always supported my dream of becoming an actress but she also tells me I need a solid backup plan. I really like working with kids and I am planning on becoming a teacher. Acting is a wonderful way to bring joy to people but teaching is essential to the future of our nation and there is nothing more rewarding than the look on the face of a little kid who just figured something out that he or she had been struggling with. My grandmother was a teacher and she also acted in many local plays at the same time so I am confident that I can accomplish both goals.
With all of this in mind, I have chosen to attend Holy Cross College at Notre Dame. I will be majoring in education and will be able to take theater classes at St. Mary’s and Notre Dame as well. I will also be taking the acting and directing programs at Holy Cross. When I graduate from college, I plan to move to Los Angeles and get a teaching job while auditioning for jobs in the entertainment business. My ultimate life goal is to bring joy to as many people as I can through acting or directing and teaching.
