Why your counselors are amazing by Jerel - November 2014 Scholarship Essay

Look, I know you’re excited for high school, and you probably feel like you’re on top of the world right now. But there are some things that you need to know before you dive head first into the chaotic dystopia that is high school. Your counselor is probably one of the most important people that you’re going to meet when you get there. When you have an altercation with another student, you go talk to your counselor. You have a teacher that you absolutely despise, go talk to your counselor and you can get switched out. Your counselor can do amazing things for you, but only if you put in the initiative.

When you first try to talk to them, they’re going to think that you’re just some sort of larvae that managed to wander into their office and ask them a stupid question. But if you’re concise, polite, and have a positive demeanor they’ll at least give you a few seconds before banishing you from their cave. Now, if you've managed to use your few seconds wisely and get off a good impression, maybe, just maybe they’ll let you talk to them like you’re not a little ankle biter. You've done it, you've managed to at least talk to your counselor, but the battle isn't over yet, you must now befriend them.

Start by coming to talk to them at least once every week or two, not for school problems, but just to say hi and see how they’re doing. Eventually, they’ll start to notice that you’re not like the other whippersnapper freshmen and they’ll grow to like you. Now you've done it, you've successfully managed to become friends with your counselor and now high school is going to be a lot easier for you, congratulations!
