An Environment Equipped for Excellence by Jennifer - October 2014 Scholarship Essay

Because every student learns in a unique way, a classroom that matches the learning preference of everyone does not exist. Students understand the information presented to them through various ways. There are three main categories of learning: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Hearing the information and performing the task are the two ways that I learn best. Therefore, I am an auditory and kinesthetic learner. In order to absorb the maximum amount of information, my ideal classroom would cater to these two specific styles of learning.

In this scenario, the professor would spend roughly half of the class time lecturing. Hearing the information is the key. Also, taking notes while listening gets my body involved and helps me remember exactly what was said. For the remaining half of the class, the professor would divide the class into groups to talk through and answer questions regarding the information taught. This gives me a chance to hear the concepts once again and learn from what my classmates have to say. Being able to solve the problem or answer a question right after hearing the lecture allows me to demonstrate my knowledge of the material and clears up any ambiguity. Additionally, I prefer this type of learning environment because I would have the freedom to ask questions in the midst of learning new concepts.

This type of classroom would help me succeed since it involves a lecture, taking notes, and a time for discussion or problem solving. In this particular classroom setting, I would leave the class with a firm grasp of the lesson taught. Since I would understand the information much better the first time, studying for a test would be less stressful. My grade would also be significantly higher considering I truly understand the material. If all my classes spent half the time listening to a lecture and half the time working in groups, I could absorb and retain the material much more easily.
