My Mother, My Educator, My Role Model by Jenna - March 2021 Scholarship Essay

When asked who my academic role model is, I first had to reflect on what makes a role model. In my eyes, a role model is someone who demonstrates undying perseverance, even in the face of obstacles, with a passion to succeed that triumphs over all else. Role models inspire young people, people like me, to follow in their footsteps as they demonstrate the "proof of concept" testing for future routes and successes. After realizing what a role model truly was and could be, the first thought that comes to my mind is my mother, a woman who has worked to not only help raise four children, but who has worked hard and academically as a teacher, principal, and superintendent as well.

Although she would never admit to it and humbles herself at the drop of a hat, my mom is an incredibly smart woman. Throughout her own academic life, she went to college, went to college again while pregnant, and went to college again with children of her own! I mean, come on, if that's not inspiring I don't know what is! She proved to me that nothing can get in the way of my education if I don't let it, a fact that I will carry with me always and forever.

As an aspiring educator myself, my mom has motivated me to continue and excel in my studies even when giving up seemed to be the obvious, easier answer, which is something I will always be grateful for. I can't even imagine how many nights she listened to me complain about how hard an assignment was or about some petty school drama, but she always assured and supported me and still woke up the next day to face her own messy world full of angry parents and students in need of discipline. She knows where I have been and where I want to go, and has never once belittled my struggles as she faces her own.

All in all, I am incredibly lucky to have my mom as a mother, an educator, and a role model. She has been through my side through thick and thin, and she is one of the reasons that I am where I am today, academically and emotionally. I know at the end of the day that my mom isn't only my role model, but an academic role model for the young people she works with every day. Thank you, mom.
