A Leader Isn't Just a Position by Jazmyn - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

When people think of leadership, they think of a quality that only certain individuals possess. Some think of it as a rare quality. It is a common misconception that a leader is just someone who runs a club, business, church, or even a country. While those people are leaders, leadership positions are not that limited. Everyone can be a leader because leaders are not always born, but created.

Leadership will take practice. You will need to learn patience, diligence, discipline, and initiative. Leadership is all about taking initiative. Leaders are people who get things done, either by delegating or doing it themselves. Leaders need patience so they can handle situations where people do not follow. Leaders need diligence so they will not give up when it seems like it will never work. Leaders need discipline so they can stay on task. These are all qualities that everyone should possess no matter if they’re a leader or a follower.

Most people would not relate possessing leadership qualities to something needed in college, but I would beg to differ.Leadership in college is essential to success. As I have heard, college is a hard transition. You don’t have someone to do your laundry for you. You don’t have someone to cook all your meals for free. You don’t have someone to get onto you to do your homework. You have to do all these things by yourself. You have to figure out the best way to work around your class schedule to get your homework done on time with efficiency. You need to be patient so you won’t go crazy when when your neighbor blasts their music way too loud when you’re studying. You need to be diligent and disciplined so that you can get your hours worth of homework done without looking at your phone or turning on Netflix. You need to take initiative and ask your professor for help if you need it, talk to your adviser if your workload is too heavy, and to go to the library to study when your neighbor is blasting their music too loud.
