Positive Impact - One Moment at a Time by Jayce - November 2019 Scholarship Essay
I am a student athlete at Boonville High School. I’m not the smartest, most popular, most talented girl in the school. I am just a girl doing my best to maneuver through these tortured years of being a teenager to adult hood.
I believe one of the most powerful methods to make a difference in someone’s life is to be kind. I’m not perfect, but I believe regardless of how you look, smell, or act everyone deserves to be treated with kindness. I do my best to accomplish this in little ways every day by smiling at those I pass in the hallway, asking and listening to how someone is feeling, and standing up for the individuals that get singled out.
I recently went to see The Joker with some of my friends from school. After the movie we were talking about everything that had happened to him and how small acts of kindness could have changed life for him and those around him.
I proceeded to open up and talk about 3 people at school that I call mocking jays. These are people that to most people either look like troublemakers or that they are going nowhere. However, I see them, I see their attempts to be a good person despite what is stacked against them. These are the people I am quietly rooting for.
I have never told these 3 individuals that I call them that, but I go out of my way to be kind, help and provide encouragement. I believe one day they will do something great in this world. My way of creating a positive impact isn’t flashy, it’s quiet, but I believe it’s effective.
