Wise Men by Javion - May 2014 Scholarship Essay

Euripedes, the great Athenian tragedian of ancient Greece, once said, “The wisest men follow their own direction”. Even though this respective quote carries more life-based philosophical weight, I’ve translated its message to the classroom. I’ve since made it my personal prerogative to stay true to this adopted creed as it sincerely holds my best interests in the highest esteem. That quote, in all of its philosophical splendor, helped me to accept my unique interests and respective fields of study as a welcome detail that’s worthy of celebration as it highlights my independence and subsequent lack of dependence on others for guidance in the selection of these interests.

That quote helped me to embrace leadership roles in multiple extracurricular organizations and involvement in college-level courses at the onset of my senior year in high school in which very few individuals found appealing. Furthermore, the negative comments surrounding my activity in those respective groups and courses, stemming from school peers, were systematically disregarded as I believed they were unwarranted distractions arising from their acknowledged inability to perform in my respective situation. Among other things, this quote taught me to believe in my abilities as they were acquired for a reason and it is up to me to choose for which specific purpose I shall use them. All in all, I believe this quote has helped me to be embrace the concept of becoming an individual, equipped with the ability to decide his own destiny, and act in the best interest of one’s self and his loved ones.
