Advancement via individual determination by jason - December 2019 Scholarship Essay
Avid has helped me immensely in my later years in highschool. When I first entered high school as a freshman I did not have college in my future. I did not do my homework, I would never put more time into school work that was not in class. I would do fairly good on tests and that's why I did not fall any classes but if I did not finish my homework in class then I did not do them at home. I would never study either.. I had a mindset that, as long as I got my diploma, I would be fine and then I can go off to college and have a future in who knows what, whatever gives me the most money and boom I'm good. I was so wrong. I joined AVID my sophomore year just because I knew they had fun field trips and events that I wanted to do to get out of class. Still not caring about my grades and college made sophomore year a lot harder than freshman year. I was failing a class and it forced me to go into academic probation, I spent more time with the avi teacher who talked to me for a long time and drilled it into my head and then shortly after to the whole class that at this rate, I will not go to college, and at least not a good one. By midway of Sophomore year between all the college advisor that came, looking at statistics and taking notes on numerous videos to scare me into changing my outlook on my grades in future, I realized this is not what I want and had to change something. I always took higher level classes but now, at this point if you did not want to put more work outside of class for some of these classes, you were doomed to fail. So I started doing what I needed to do and did my best to catch up and try to actually keep a decent GPA that´ll not leave me trapped in my hometown for Years to come. Not only that AVid became such a big part of me that I am now on the board and am the one whos throws out ideas for events and trips, I speak publicly to others for our organization to my peers, and avid really pushed me to join a club so I followed one of my dreams and became a thespians and perform plays, if it wasn't for AVID, I would have never done that in front of hundreds of students, I owe everything to this organization.
