Life Is Unexpected by Jasmyn - June 2017 Scholarship Essay

When I was six years old, I was enamored by the fame and fortune associated with entertainers. So, consequently, my goal in life had been to become a singer/model/actress triple threat and reside in a huge mansion somewhere in California. But as time progressed and I entered middle school, I was steered toward a different passion. I loved to read and write, so I said to myself that I would become a journalist or a magazine editor and live in a loft apartment in the exciting and eventful Big Apple. Now, after I have had ample time to explore all the careers I could see myself doing in the future, I have settled on a goal to become a surgeon (perhaps orthopedic but I could also envision becoming a cardiothoracic or general specialist as well), find the cure to cancer and other life-threatening diseases, and purchase a mansion in a country club or golf course somewhere near Atlanta.
Right now, I have no desire to become a famous model or a magazine editor and this is because of my love for Biology. In this season of my life, I can only see myself enriching myself in the knowledge of the human body and progressing in my goal to one day be a surgeon or the person that finds the cure to cancer or both! Over the years, I have established roots and learned my values. I have determined that I like my privacy and I would not want to become famous. It feels great to be in a point in my life where I know exactly what I want to do.
At six years old, I had no idea my life would take this turn. I never knew I would be displaced from my home in New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina. I never knew I would be a nerd and love learning so much. I never knew I would graduate in the top 10 percent of my class. I never knew I would be accepted into the Georgia Institute of Technology. Life has taken so many unexpected twists and turns, but I am very happy at where I am now. For all I know, my life can be even more unexpected in the future.
After reflecting on my past, I have concluded one thing: life is ever-changing and unexpected. When you’re young, you do dream of romanticized versions of reality. I thought I would be happy with a future filled with fame, but I was wrong. I can only see myself happy if I use my brains and years of schooling to become a surgeon and help others. I do not know what life has in store for me, but I will continue to work towards my goal. If my life happens to go in another path, I will be okay with that too; as long I am still able to help others.
