The Impossible by Jasmine - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Leadership is a strong word and for some people this position comes naturally, while for others it is nearly impossible. I used to be one of those people who had to work for this title. In high school I didn’t see the point of putting yourself out there to lead others when someone else could do it for me. Back then I didn’t realize the importance of upholding a leadership position and what a positive impact it would have on me in college.

As a college freshman, I wanted to stick out from all the people around me. I thought about joining all kinds of clubs or a sport but couldn’t decide what I could do to achieve this goal. I never did pick anything and for the first semester I immediately regretted not doing anything special.

One day when checking my email, I got a message asking if I would be interested in volunteering in a third grade class twice a week to help them preform science experiments. It sounded perfect because I love science and little kids. I immediately responded and that next Monday I was so excited to start my first day.

I didn’t really know what to expect on my first day but I didn’t realize how much I would actually love helping them. They had tons of questions and looked up to me for the answer. It wasn’t just help for them, but also for myself. I noticed myself becoming more outgoing and helpful to the people around me.

Having leadership skills in college is important whether you hold a huge position such as leading your grade as president or a small one by helping a small group of people. It not only helps the community, but also betters yourself as a person. Helping others has been proven to have a positive effect on our happiness and well-being. Why not help others while also helping yourself?
