A New Career; A New Perspective by Jasmine - May 2021 Scholarship Essay

“The best things in life are worth waiting for.” A career is symbolic of a photograph. You can take it multiple ways and look at it from different angles. Career alterations can uncover a hidden talent and true calling in life. A dream can become a reality, reinforcing the count of alterations one has to make towards a career choice. For instance, one must feel that they have to choose a career path to make their parents proud, become rich, and successful in life. Transitioning careers can make you successful if you are willing to recognize the value of hard work. As Dhar Mann once said, “You can be anything you want to be in life as long as you work hard for it. "Do not let anybody tell you otherwise.” Changing my course of study was life-altering because it made me discover a hidden talent, leading to a voice on paper. At the time, I was at a charter school when my English teacher asked me, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” With no hesitation, I replied, “A Pharmacist.” At that time, the only thing I knew about becoming a Pharmacist was they earn a very high salary and deal with medications. I eventually found my career path when my English teacher assigned a life-changing project. Into the depth of research, I received shocking information about being a Pharmacist. My hard work turned into an A+, yet my future was at the lowest grade possible.

The life alteration of my course of study revealed my hidden talent in writing. From a bottle of medicine to editing, my career path took a new turn. My parents are very supportive of my career choice, as well as my English teacher. In seventh grade, my charter school gave me the chance to become successful by learning differently, which helped me realize my calling in life. For instance, writing involves reading comprehension; you have to use your inference skills. You have to be a detective of the story, not just a reader of words. However, my reading comprehension was at a second-grade level, which is why I chose a Pharmacist as a career choice instead of a Journalist. The importance of critical thinking is truly a gift because it helps you make a life-altering change. Despite my low comprehension skills, I used critical thinking skills to recognize what I had within me. My courage to dig deeper into a story became unlimited, increasing my inference skills. My writing was on point, receiving a little help with the organization of my news story. The essence of it became meaningful throughout my experiences in school life. Furthermore, my talent as a writer became a pathway to journalism, while my voice allowed me to attend the college of my dreams.

Changing my course of study was a life alteration because my voice became outspoken and heard publicly for the first time. "Now I have altered my career pathway into my lifelong dream, but how can I afford college to deliver that dream ?” My parents introduced me to scholarships and helped me in my search. From hours to weeks, we searched the Internet. In twelfth grade, I got accepted to Del Mar College. I became exhilarated to tell my parents the news. However, I still had not found a single scholarship to help pay for college. As my Dad was paying the NEC electricity bill, he came across an email titled, “Ramiro De La Paz Scholarship; open to all high school students.” When I came home, he showed me the email, and I immediately applied and sent in the application. On April 5, 2020, I won the scholarship because of my achievements and accomplishments and the content of my essay. The email stated, “Congratulations on your academic achievements and accomplishments.” “It is with great honor and pleasure to award you with the Ramiro De La Paz Scholarship.” From that moment on, my life altered with encouragement to enter the field of journalism.
A voice can be powerful, which defines one's character. The explicit detail, organization, content, and most importantly, the passion that regulates within the writer communicates a life-changing story.

This life-altering career change took five years to confirm. Why did it happen? Well, I believe that it was a calling from God. Also, my life and our society have many stories to tell, and I want to be the one to write them. This career exchange helped me embrace my shyness, confidence, and self-esteem. My shyness became an identity; being shy is my superpower because I can create some things without speaking a word, for instance, a novel. Confidence allows me to believe in myself. “I can become a singer.” “I can become a journalist.” Self-esteem says, “I am worth something.” To this day, those words stay in my mind until I achieve them. Transitioning careers was an incredible experience because it allowed me to discover my worth, identity, and talent. From this experience, I learned that life is full of unlimited opportunities. As a college freshman, my career alteration has allowed me to nurture my brain with knowledge and my body with confidence. The life-alteration of my course of study allowed the discovery of my talent and my voice to be outspoken. It made me realize that "The best things in life are worth waiting for."
