The gifts from an education by Jasmine - November 2020 Scholarship Essay
I am very thankful to be given the chance to gain an education because it has been the very foundation in creating the person who I am today. Without my education, I would have not been able to gain valuable skills, lifelong friends, and gratitude for what I have. All of these are the stepping stones for me to become a successful adult in my chosen career as well as become an overall happy person. Education comes from people who find their path to become a teacher. Teachers are at the start of a student having a successful educational career. They empower, support, and change the lives of students every single time they enter the school building.
If it were not for supporting teachers that have nourished my creativity as I was learning, I would not be searching for a career in the creative field. The art classes as well as all the times I have been able to express myself through my projects have nourished my creative needs. I am thankful for the support because it has lead me to pursue a career in product design. Another skill I have had to learn through my education is to be organized. I need to keep track of all of my important dates, deadlines, and meetings. My education has encouraged me to keep track of assignments so I do not fall behind in school and so I can excel on tests. This is a skill that started in high school will be one that will lead me into my career and for the rest of my life. An employer does not want someone who is late, or can not meet a deadline. In the end, this skill makes me more punctual as well as a better employee. Lastly, I believe independence is the best skill my education has helped encourage. This skill especially applies to being in college. Later in life as well as now, I can not rely on my family to help me by reminding me to complete tasks. Also, being in college your parent can not contact your professors if you make a bad grade, it completely relies on you and is your responsibility. In my case due to my financial status, my parents can not help me even pay to go to college. This means I have had to take it upon myself to go out and search for opportunities to pay for school. My love to have education has encouraged me to grow and be more independent. So even paying for my education has made an impact on me by making me growing up to be more self-efficient.
While on the path of education I have met many friends that have supported me along the way. Whether it is them calming down from a panic attack or laugh about a class we took they have always been there. Especially when I got to college I have been able to find a fantastic group of people that help me the best way they can and as I do the same for them. These are the kind of friends that I want to follow me for the rest of my life. I want them to participate in all the other important events coming in my future. If it were not for my education I would have not had the chance to meet these people.
Lastly, I am very grateful that I can receive an education. I am a female first-generation college student. In countries such as Chad, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, and many more it is frowned upon for women to obtain an education. In other cases, it is completely impossible for women to have the chance to go to school for an education. Even though America has its bias against women in the stem field it does not stop me from pursuing a career in that field. There is no law against me paying to go to college to achieve higher education. I am also very thankful to be able to be the first in my family to go to college. This is thanks to the opportunities I received while I was in high school. It also comes from the hard work and skills that I gained from my education in high school.
Overall, education has a whole lot more to offer rather than just learn the basic subjects such as math and science. When you go to school to gain an education you are taught life skills that help you now and for the future. Education also allows you to have teachers that support you in learning these skills. Whether they show you tough love and not let you turn in an assignment you missed because you were unorganized, or whether they encourage you to be creative with your assignment. It has helped me socialize and given me friends that I am going to have for the rest of my life. Lastly, I am thankful that I am even able to have the opportunity to achieve an education. Many people can not go to school and learn what is needed to follow their dreams. Education is a gift that I have worked from and learned from. It is at the core of creating the person I am today and the connections I have made through my life.
