Struggle Free Education by Jasmine - May 2020 Scholarship Essay

Education is vital to a human. It shapes us into unique people with personal ideas and thoughts on issues of the world or problem solving. Not everybody can solve for ‘X’ but everybody can learn something valuable. In 50 years education will not have a price, education will motivate, and education will be safe. All of these issues could be made right in 50 years to give students the best way to learn and grow in their own ways.

All education comes at a price whether you can pay it or not. When I was in high school, I continuously stressed over how I would pay for a $40 class fee. The prices haunted me! And I know what you’re thinking “it’s only $40 Jasmine, you can easily pay that off.” But it’s not that straightforward because that could pay for a couple days of groceries or go towards an important, upcoming bill. Over time, I learned that prices halt education. Fees stop the growth of knowledge and pause the progress individuals make in school. Something as silly as a number determines how much or how well we can be educated.

There have been countless times when learning was bland and tasteless. Education should be flavorful and exciting! Lessons that are hands-on and unforgettable are what every student looks for. Having a boring education does not motivate a single soul. Have you ever looked forward to a long class that felt so meaningless and exhausting? Exactly, no one looks forward to that! A memorable learning experience is what every student should expect when being educated. If all people were driven to learn it would create a completely different learning environment that people would indulge in.

A safe place to absorb wisdom should be a guarantee to students. It shouldn’t be a luxury to have a violent-free source of education. A students safety should be a number one priority. I went to a school where aggressive fights broke-out for meaningless reasons and that took the focus away from the classroom. Multiple times I was told about children threatening to “shoot up” my school. It is frightening having to watch your back when you are supposed to be in a safe place. Equally important, a safe place to learn should promise a secure area to share thought without fear of judgement. Many students struggle to share their voice or work because they are afraid of harsh criticism. Students should be taught to embrace their unique ideas and accept failure while making growth. Personal thoughts and failure are a part of a learner’s life that should be more welcomed in education. Failure is completely normal and can be the best way to learn at times; that's a valuable lesson I wish I understood sooner.

Education is more than learning from a textbook or copying notes. It’s an experience of a lifetime that lasts a lifetime. Having a price halts education, a non-motivating learning space weighs down students, and being afraid to go to classes takes away from lessons. Take away these issues and being educated will be better for everyone. Obtaining knowledge can be made right if we fix these problems in the next 50 years.
