Leadership by Jarrod - October 2013 Scholarship Essay

The qualities demonstrated in a good leader are integrity, dedication, assertiveness, being humble and having sense of humor. Those same qualities defined me when I joined the Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps program during my time at Job Corps. The Junior Reserves Office Training Corps was established to encourage young adults to have a career in the military. Although, I was not planning to join the military I was interested in the program because activity included extensive exercises; promoting discipline and being self-sufficient. In addition, I was enrolled in the Certified Nursing Assistant program at Job Corps. A certified nursing assistant is responsible for assisting residents with activities of daily living including helping with meals, transferring using assistive devices, bathing, dressing and grooming.. Although, x-ray technician is my main goal; I wanted to start somewhere in the medical field. Meanwhile, as a new cadet I learned a lot throughout being promoted in the ranks how to discipline myself. For example, organizing and managing cleanliness in my room, and make sure that my uniform was neat and tidy. Throughout my training I showed dedication by being punctual and developed an excuseless attitude when showing up to my physical training meets. Physical training meets were held in the gym from three thirty to five o'clock ; the meets were intense with very extensive training exercises such as push-ups, sit-ups, running three miles outside and around the gym, and marching. Furthermore, time passed I was promoted throughout ranks; and learn with each rank came more responsibilities. My major was trying to help me be less timid and more assertive towards people. Eventually, I was promoted to staff sergeant being more involved in calling commands, cadences, and punishment when misbehavior occurred. However, I was always humble when physical training meets were over. Afterwards, I would always open myself up to conversations with fellow cadets as well as majors and sergeants; I never felt arrogance towards anybody. Nevertheless, integrity was used frequently in my everyday living because in order to make a good decision you must have integrity, as well as good common sense. I used my integrity to overpower to negative comments about me joining the Junior Reserves Office Training Corps program because it was frowned upon by my peers at school, but I felt it was a beneficial learning experience. Moreover, Junior Reserves Office Training Corps was looked at as a very strict program, but we still had fun. I used my sense of humor sometimes during or outside of physical training the cadets, majors, and sergeants respected that. Meanwhile, outside of Junior Reserves Office Training Corps I used integrity and dedication to complete and pass the state test to become a Certified Nursing Assistant
My future endeavors I would like to incorporate the same traits I used while in Junior Reserves Office Training Corps at Job Corps. During my journey in Tidewater Community College I would like to become an x-ray technician, it has been my dream since graduating high school. When a class gets intense and rigorous I use my determination to never give up. I will be steadfast going to tutoring sessions and intensive studying to achieve my goal. I will use integrity in my classes and my future life decisions when I graduate from college. I will be assertive because a lot of issues occur and people will be in the way to distort me from accomplishing my goal, but I will be resilient proceed and progress. In addition, being humble and having a sense of humor among my peers establishing a good relationship with them. All these qualities will exemplify a good leader likewise; my leadership skills could motivate others to have the same successful results.
I believe these qualities make a great leader in life to make successful achievements and good decisions. As long as, I am going through life I will continue to be a good example and a role model to others. Also, motivates others by example and to achieve my dreams.
