Jared Brock: New Years Resolution Essay by Jared - January 2016 Scholarship Essay

Of the various New Year’s resolutions I’ve taken on this January, one in particular has a direct effect on the essay I’m writing this very moment. Simply put, I have taken to Resolution of “Making more lists”. We see this all the time of course, using checklists to help us focus on things we want to change about ourselves. While generic things like “Exercise” and “Eat healthier” are a part of my lists, another set starts my day with as much a boost as a hundred pushups (which to be fair, I also try to accomplish). When I wake up this year, I have a list of things, ranging from musical training, to scholarship hunting, to self-education and everything in-between. Like working in an office every day, I look at my laptop and know what I wanted to accomplish the night before as I wrote it.

Not wanting to disappoint past me (whom was admittedly a bit idealistic after a long binge-session of Game of Thrones), I will promptly take to these lists every day, ensuring even if I’ve it off I spend each day productively. A student’s life, when they’re in school, is easier for a sole reason; they have structure, a place where they are told how to succeed. But as adult life, and college life loom closer, the need for self-discipline is one my peers and I need to take note of. So with these lists, these guaranteed ways for me to know what I need to accomplish to be successful, I’m setting myself up for becoming the greatest student I can be. I may not be the smartest, well scoring student walking into whatever college I end up choosing, but I intend to be the hardest working.
