The Lonely Monster by Jared - March 2017 Scholarship Essay

Throughout schools there are many challenges that come our way, whether it be our grades, how we compete in a sport, or even how popular we are. As a student, I understand how hard it can be at times with all the pressure and anxiety of other people’s expectations. If I had the chance I would talk to schools about an important topic involving others. I would give a speech about not allowing anyone to be alone or rejected in school, and what we can do to change this.
Maybe you’re still not interested or you just do not understand why this matters but it is important. When you are alone you no longer feel any love from anyone and you can understand why. People will ignore you everyday, give you weird looks, and even speak gossip to others right in front of you. They treat you like someone who has no feelings and will never hang around you. After a while you feel like a monster who can only talk if you say something that is funny, but in actuality is rude or mean. You go home every day realizing that your life is getting nowhere and start crying somewhere secluded not understanding why you were the one chosen to be alone for your whole life.
Now that you know how it can feel to be alone I will explain why this happens. If I wanted to I could describe it all in one word that word being selfishness. People in school are brutal and use words to boost themselves up while hurting others. A group of friends is created because they have similarities and if someone doesn’t have similarities they are left behind to figure out how to be accepted. The group of friends will only accept them now if they change who they are as a person and get rid of anything they once valued. People take their own lives for this reason because they thought there was no one who could relate or understand them and they don’t want to become someone different living a life they consider a lie. Now there are people who will relate to those alone but their voice and actions will never be shown because they decided to live a lie and don’t want to end up losing their group because they spent time with the loner. Selfish motives are what allow people to move along in life not thinking of the ones who are left behind and only caring if it affects them.
I know making friends in school can be difficult so if we are going to include someone who has been alone we need to be prepared and have ideas in order to be there for them.We as students can take time out of our day to say hello, recognize someone who’s alone or even just wave. You could allow that person to join you in your group or invite him/her to hangout with you and your friends. If you are too afraid to do this you could just chat with them or text them something nice showing you care. We need to include anyone who is alone any way possible so please don’t allow yourself to ignore them but recognize them as the person they are. We are the one who create the lonely monster because we break relations with them and slowly attack their heart until all that’s left is an empty soul ready to die.
I will you with this by saying you matter and you can change your school. Although this may sound stereotypical or easy to say it is true. We are the future generation and if we can have people who are selfless and thoughtful we can change societies, countries, help the poor, and care for those who need help. If we practice this kindness and display these actions in our school we will save lives of the lonely, and change communities. All lives matters no matter how different or strange, they don’t have to be like you, and they will appreciate what you have done.
