From Leadership Skills comes Successful College Gradautes by Janice - March 2015 Scholarship Essay
Leadership skills are not necessary for college success, however, leadership skills allow the student to see their goal of graduation and establish a plan on how to achieve that goal. A college student with leadership skills looks at their future and creates a mental image that sets the tone and direction for their time in school. It helps them to look at their priorities and determine the level of importance is for each of the priorities. Leadership skills are necessary for college success because it makes the student responsible and accountable for their actions. Students accept responsibility for their actions and are able to see and learn from their failures. They are able to get up and dust themselves off and try again.
College is a big step in education for anyone. It is completely different from high school. An individual with leadership skills are able to see their future and create a plan to achieve their goal. Leadership skills assist with creating a plan or strategy to accomplish the goal of graduation. Individuals with leadership skills are able to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses to determine how they can utilize their strengths to help them accomplish their goals and what assistance they may need to strengthen their weakness or resources available to them to assist in their areas of weakness.
Leadership skills can help a student with stress of college life and the demands and expectations from professors. A type of confidence comes from leadership skills. Individuals may be better able to deal with the unexpected changes and the critiques from their professor. The student is better able to get their thoughts across to classmates or their professors in a manner that is professional. The leadership skills will also help the student to work with classmates who come from different backgrounds and beliefs.
Leadership skills also help with social skills, more specifically, when working on group/team projects/assignments. Individuals are able to communicate a problem or a solution. Rather than being the individual that gets upset when someone doesn’t agree with them, they are able to listen and appreciate another person’s opinion or point of view. They are able to hold an intelligent conversation with classmates and professors. Being able to socialize in a professional manner can have its rewards. Professors may ask an individual to be a part of a project or they may be offered a highly sought out internship with an organization.
Although I think leadership skills are necessary in order to be successful in college, I also believe that college is a great place to learn many of these leadership skills. Students who lack leadership skills are exposed to students who have leadership skills and are able to observe and put into practice their own leadership skills. Students have an opportunity every time they go to class to learn a new leadership skill. The skills can range from managing stress, obtaining better problem solving skills, speaking with other classmates, listening skills, and building confidence.
Leadership skills create successful college graduates who are able to leave school and find meaning employment in their area of concentration. They are able to start their new career feeling confident and professional. They are able to manage the change from school to career. Leadership skills involves constant learning and evolving. The environment changes from school to career. The people change from classmates to coworkers. The goal may change from graduation to promotion. What doesn’t change is the need for great leaders. Leadership skills that are developed and strengthened in college, creates a successful leader in an organization.
