Organization by Jamie Jo - September 2014 Scholarship Essay

College is person’s first breath of real life; their first chance to be free, to be independent, to be an individual. Unfortunately, that means there are some new things to learn. The worst part about being independent? No one is going to answer your questions for you. As a college student, you’re on your own. Though panicking seems to be the most well-fitting option, there is a specific skill that makes the new pressure far more bearable, and that is organization. Being organized means operating on a different level than others around you might be. It means working harder to keep everything in order. A sense of organization can be applied to everything; time, space, even people. By staying organized, you are staying ahead of the curves life will inevitably throw at you.

Keeping space organized is a simple thing to do, but it increases productivity so quickly. By making certain that the space you study, live, and cook in is clean and orderly, a person can function more efficiently in the space they’re in. Not only can they find and utilize needed tools quicker, they can also navigate what they’re doing in their mind with more ease. An ordered environment helps the mind focus, and lessens distractions. The space we exist in has more of an impact on us than we think. If a room is disorganized or disheveled, the human brain will have to fight constant distractions in every direction. By making sure everything has a place, and resides in it, there’s less for the brain to notice. An organized space makes for an organized mind.

Organizing people is a trickier feat, but when it comes down to it, the only person you need to organize is yourself. An organized person is one who knows what’s going on in their lives. They don’t let life happen around them, they take action in order to make sure that they can stay ahead of the game. They master the world around them, no matter how fast it may change. Becoming someone who always knows what’s going on also expands options. If a person always has an idea of what’s going on around them, they can take advantage of opportunities they might never have had otherwise. It can also be beneficial to make sure you’re an organized person with regards to preparedness. Those who are prepared for the future can end up controlling their future. By keeping on top of what’s around them, they are better able to keep it organized for themselves.

Either the trickiest or simplest thing to organize is time, and the amount of ease with which you control it is entirely up to you. Where some need planners and reminders, others can keep all the information they need inside their minds. Whether you need to write it down somewhere or not, a person, especially a college student, needs to keep their time organized. Class schedules, homework schedules, even just daily schedules can be hugely beneficial to a student’s sanity. Keeping time managed leaves less likelihood that they’ll have to cram for a test, or look all of their homework up on the internet. However, classes and schoolwork are not the only aspects of time a college student needs to manage; in order to keep organized, their entire perspective needs to change. The social aspects of college are essentials, just like classes and homework. It’s important to leave reasonable amounts of time for everything on a person’s plate. Double booking, rushed projects, and scatter-brained assignments can all be avoided in the student in question plans for them. Although sometimes a person can be spread a little thin, budgeting and managing time will always be more beneficial than running about in a panic.

There are millions of un-evaluated aspects of college. However, tackling them becomes easier when the basic principles of organization are employed. Cleaning a room won’t make a schedule any less crowded, but it will begin to assist the brain in handling that busy schedule. Organization is a chain-reaction skill that simply keeps going. Once a person gets more organized, they begin to organize their space, and eventually their time. By managing these three basic ideals, college becomes more possible to do. Simply keeping things organized gives a student an edge, and a foot up above those who can’t keep their lives in order. Staying organized means staying successful.
