Enders Game by Jamie - February 2015 Scholarship Essay
I strongly believe that at one point in their High School career each student should participate in reading Ender's Game. The reason I picked this book is because no other book has managed to grasp my interest as effectively as Ender's Game. Orson Scott Card manages to put together an entire world within one book. And when students read the book, I believe that they will learn that things are not always as they seem. Also no matter how hard, or impossible a task might be, there is always a way to accomplish it. And most importantly, never doubt yourself, or belittle your accomplishments. Without your complete knowledge you might have just saved the world completely blindfolded. Well, maybe not that much, but things you do can impact other people without you even being aware of it.
When I was in High School, I would always wonder why we were reading the books that we had to read. Such as Catcher in the Rye, to me all that book showed was the story of a depressed man’s journey to suicide. And even past that, we are reading Shakespeare books, with an English language not used for a thousand years. This is not a bad thing, but I believe if high school students are forced to sit through a reading of Romeo and Juliet, then you can give them an interested book as well. Plus, if that’s not enough I was a High School student! I have been through High school, now I am out and I can honestly say I would have actually remembered the story of Enders Game, when I don’t even care to remember the stories from half the books we did read in High school. Take it from somebody who has been there! If you want students to participate in reading, as well as actually enjoying the literature you have placed in front of them, then why not make it interesting? Give them something they will want to read ahead on. Give the students a book they will enjoy taking home from school and reading. I am tired of school being a boring, stupid activity in most teenagers’ minds. I believe if you implemented Enders Game into High school literature then students would not only enjoy reading their homework, but learn more from it than you could ever imagine. A book that is read with desire teaches a thousand times more than a book skipped through with boredom!! That is why I chose Enders Game.
