Forgive me Father, I have failed You by James - February 2017 Scholarship Essay
In January of 2015 I dropped out of the Confirmation program at my parish. I was not happy with how the program was being run. I did not feel I was learning about my faith and did not understand why the sacrament of Confirmation was important. In May, when the rest of the class was being Confirmed, I began regretting my choice.
I realized that I had failed my God, my family and myself. My faith has always been an important part of my life and I let my close-minded and negative attitude affect my relationship with God. I was blind to the big picture and settled for instant gratification, not having to attend the Confirmation classes. I quit. I am not a quitter; I had never quit anything before or since. I was disappointed in myself and disappointed that I let others down. I had the support of my family to fix the situation and I knew that my God had forgiven me.
During the summer, I met with the pastor and the program leader. I explained to them why I dropped out. The two worked with me over the summer and got me in a position to be Confirmed, which I did receive in September 2015. By speaking up and being honest with my pastor, I learned to ask for help and gain support. I am happy I received the Sacrament of Confirmation and in an effort to give back, I volunteer as a Teen Lead in the Confirmation program.
I made a mistake, I failed to make the right decision when it came to my faith. I recognized that mistake and made the efforts to correct it. I know that I will make mistakes in the future, I may fail to recognize the importance of a situation or fail to be open-minded. My hope is that before I make any final decisions that I reflect on this experience and be willing to analyze the situation and make a more informed choice.
