Plans vs Destiny by Jaiden - April 2020 Scholarship Essay

I titled my essay Plans vs Destiny because the plan I had for my life isn’t coming to fruition. I wasn’t looked at by colleges and have not received a scholarship. All the while everyone around me was succeeding in their life plans, I was staying stagnant. Not once did I get angry or sad, I was just curious. I wondered what was meant for me. I honestly am so grateful that my plan isn’t the route I’m taking at this point. Why? Because it made me grow up and realize that my way might not be the best way.
My destiny is written but I don’t yet know what it is. I do know that God has great plans for me. I was recently accepted to Morehouse College. Growing up I never thought I was worthy to go to such an amazing college that has so much history, a place that groomed great men that have made such an impact on the world. See it wasn’t my “plan”, but it is my “destiny”.
With this amazing opportunity I found that I wanted to do more career wise, I wanted to be more, I wanted all the men before me to feel that I am worthy of being a Morehouse man. I told my mom a long time ago I wanted to be a doctor, a neurologist to be exact. She gets migraines often and I wanted to fix her. Somewhere along the way I lost that desire, that flame dimmed in me. It has been reignited. I want to help my community as a doctor. I want to help homeless that are afraid to walk into a hospital. I want to help kids that are sick feel better again. I want to show people young and old to not let your flame dim for anyone or anything.
You can’t become a doctor without going to college. The amount of learning that goes into that career field alone is the reason we need college. College teaches you a specific field of work. You can’t get that from just high school. College gives you time to grow into an adult, become independent and that helps you with your career in my opinion. Currently the world is faced with an invisible enemy, the Corona Virus and its nurses and doctors that are our nations heroes. Its scientist that are doing research to help fight the disease, help prevent it. The skills that those jobs have you can’t just jump off your coach and volunteer to help. You need an education and that’s why college is important. The professional athletes and actors of the world aren’t our heroes, it’s those with the education from a college that they can apply to a healthcare field or teaching or grocery stores. So, going to college is one thing but it’s what you do with the degree that matters. None of the doctors, nurses, or grocery store workers had plans to be 2020’s superheroes but it’s their destiny.
