Varsity Tutor Scholarship Essay by Jaela - April 2020 Scholarship Essay

While researching colleges during study hall, I caught my friend taking a quick glance at my computer screen. He said, “I don’t see why y’all are stressing out about this college stuff; all universities do is steal your money and make you depressed.” I didn’t respond instantly. I took what he said into consideration. I began thinking about how a college education, or lack thereof, has affected my family: my mother didn’t complete college because she became pregnant. My first cousin never finished earning her college degree because of financial difficulties. My brother never had the opportunity to attend college because he has autism.

As I continued typing up information, I decided not to respond to his statement. However, my mind kept pondering why attending college is important to me. After thinking of the life experiences and situations that held my family back from earning degrees, I realized that no one will ever go through the same college experience. The unknowns about what college has to offer excites me. From the educational opportunities that might open doors to the friendships that may form, these moments can’t be foreseen. Ultimately, the journey you go through while in college can be used to help you find your purpose and drive you to become successful during adulthood. I wish that my friend still attended school on a regular basis.I would tell him that going to college doesn’t leave you stranded in life, but rather it helps you find a way through it.
