When many people think about leadership skills, they think of being able to lead a group of people to accomplish the task at hand. However, many people overlook the leadership skills that one must have toward their own self. College is extremely different from high school. If kids are anything like me, they didn’t have to open a book in high school to pass with an A, yet in college that is definitely not the case. Instead of meeting every single day like you do in high school, most college classes only meet 2-3 times per week and require a lot of outside studying if you would like to pass the class with an A. I got a rude awakening of that my first semester when I realized that I would actually have to put in the effort required of me if I wanted to ace my classes.

College is EXTREMELY important in todays society as many jobs require some form of college degree to even be considered for their companies position. That being said, grades are the most important thing that will lead you to that degree. You have to be able to lead yourself in the right direction in college. You don’t have those teachers or guidance counselors that are going to keep pushing you and pushing you to get your stuff taken care of. In college if you want to succeed then you will, and if you want to slack off and party then your fate will be otherwise. Don’t get me wrong there are group projects in college just like there are in high school, but you have to be able to lead yourself and drive yourself in the right direction if you want to do well in college.

Many people choose not to go to college because it is hard. Many of the people that say that are the ones that do lack leadership skills, because they were the ones that sat back in high school and let others tell them what they had to do in order to pass. Having those skills with you in college will make your life ten times easier because you will already have an idea of what your work will take to get accomplished. Leadership skills are not for everyone and if you don’t have them you are not necessarily going to fail in college, but having those leadership skills will definitely help you in the long run and better prepare you for what you are going to have to get done to receive your degree.
