Leadership Skills Drive College Success by Jacob - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

A college student who demonstrates leadership skills will be successful in accomplishing their college goals. A leadership skill like being able to create a vision of success and a path to accomplish that success will set the stage for the college student's success. To be a successful college student doesn't only mean achieving graduation. College should be a deeply profound experience and a right of passage from young adulthood to becoming a truly valued citizen of the community, state, and country. This means, to be successful in college, a student must consider the "whole person concept" and use the leadership skill of being able to balance academic life, social life, family life, professional life and spiritual life by having good prioritization and time management skills. The students leadership skills will drive him or her down a healthy path to college, as a whole person concept, success.

Leadership skills such as integrity and service before self will enable the college student to be true to those he or she must engage with, meet deadlines, produce quality products, and be a valued-member of his or her college team and community. Leaders get involved! Academic success on paper will not make a person successful in college but rather leave him or her with untapped potential. It is in the application of that knowledge through success and failing forward, that the college student truly becomes successful.

To really be successful the college student has to be able to communicate well in both written and verbal manners. Being a good listener probably the hardest leadership skill to attain, but the most important. A college student must be able to listen attentively, take direction, be creative, and work alone and as a member of a team to solve problems and to interact with instructors and fellow students in a way that will facilitate a synergistic effect allowing each to build off the creativity of the others and all become successful as they mutually support each other and move toward success of their goals. Possessing the leadership skill of being a great communicator will enable the student to make his or her vision clear and enable him or her to work with the other students and faculty to make a path all can follow to success.

A college student who demonstrates these leadership skills, among others, will be successful in college and beyond.
