Jakey and Larry Go to the Game by Jacob - June 2014 Scholarship Essay

If I were to write a book, it would be a children’s book called, “Jakey and Larry Go to the Game”. In my book, I, Jake McGee (Jakey), would go to a Boston Celtics game with my idol and favorite player of all time, Larry Bird (Larry). The book would be accentuated with interactive features such as 3-D pop ups and pull tabs. For example, one pull tab, when moved up and down, would make it look like the a basketball is bouncing and another, when moved back and forth, would make a ball appear as though it is going to swish in the net. The book would be a story of adventure, accomplishment, and heroism. Through my book, children, especially young and aspiring basketball payers, could be educated about some basketball history and about Larry Bird. I would write this book to share my love of the game of basketball, the Boston Celtics, and the great, Larry Legend, himself.

In the book, Larry and Jakey would get to the stadium early and he would give me a tour of the whole facility, including the locker rooms and fan shop, where Larry would give Jakey some free Celtics gear; signed, of course. Next, Larry would take Jakey down to the court where they could shoot around before the game started (dream come true). After they finished shooting, they would go out to Larry’s favorite restaurant for a pregame meal of steak and potatoes (Larry’s favorite). During the meal, Larry would recount his legendary tales of playoff success and championship glory. After the pre-game meal, they would go take their courtside seats (another dream come true) and prepare for the game. The game would be a classic matchup between the current Celtics and their arch rival, Los Angeles Lakers. The game would be a historic match going into 8 overtimes, making it the longest lasting game in NBA history. In the 8th overtime, the Celtics would ask Larry to come out of retirement for the final game winning play (another dream come true). Of course, Larry would ask Jakey to join him on the court for the final play. Not believing that some random kid coming out of the stands would do anything, the Lakers would decide to double team Larry and leave Jakey open. Making the right basketball play as Larry always did, he would pass it to the wide open Jakey ( 3rd dream come true). Jakey would take the shot as the buzzer sounded and sink it in classic heroic Celtics fashion (4th dream come true). The crowd would go wild and Larry would carry Jakey off the court on his shoulders to the chants of “MVP, MVP, MVP!!!” from the crowd(Final dream come true).
