Z to A: Zoology to Architecture by Jacob - June 2017 Scholarship Essay

I was always a dreamer, from the first day I could dream to now! When I was six years old, I wanted to be a zoologist. I loved animals, and I loved going to the zoo. I loved reading books about animals, and learning all I could about them. My second grade teacher taught us a lot about the rain forest, which was one of her favorite things to talk about. She would decorate the classroom like a jungle, and we would pretend that it was real! I was completely intrigued! Eventually, I met who would soon become my best friend at the time, Jessie Burrows! He was interested in marine biology, which paired perfectly with my interest in land animals. We would play at recess and pretend that we were working as our dream careers! It is a very great memory!
Eventually, Jessie moved to Colorado. Then, a few months later, I moved away as well, and we lost contact with each other. As time went on, my interests shifted. My dad had gotten a new video game on the computer, The Sims 2. This game allows one to build houses and control a simulated family. My favorite part was building the houses. Actually, more specifically, I enjoyed designing the interiors rather than designing the wall layout. This gained my interest in interior design. After a while, and as I got older, my interest in architecture grew.
One of the biggest reasons I enjoyed architecture was the design, and the ability to make people happy with a new home. I studied books of architecture, learning about different architects and buildings. I surrounded myself with architecture. I was certain that this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
Then, I went for my first year of architecture school! There were parts that I enjoyed, of course, but I found that my interest was not as high as I thought it was. Throughout the first year of university, I learned a lot about myself, and how I enjoy working. I learned that I like working with others a lot more than alone. I found that I wanted to help people on a more personal level.
After talking with counselors, mentors, friends, and family; I decided to change my major to Psychology. In this profession, my end goal is to help diagnose people with mental disorders, and ultimately make their lives easier. However, I want to do more than just diagnose and prescribe medicine. I want to show them love and care. I want them to see that they are more than their disorder. I want them to feel like people as much as people without mental disorders.
Over the years, many things have changed in my life. There is one thing, however, that has stayed the same: my love for animals and people. I have always wanted to help people other than myself. Yes, the pay is nice, but the ultimate goal is to use my life to care for others.
