Intellectual Growth by Jackson - November 2019 Scholarship Essay
At a glance, all applicants exemplify intellectual curiosity, a desire for diverse learning opportunities, and community involvement. What sets ordinary applicants apart from extraordinary candidates is how they demonstrate those qualities in their own lives and how they can positively contribute to their high school and student body. I believe that my high academic rigor, growing leadership skills, and dedication to improving the community around me, prove that I am work to be a positive influence for my school and community. .
As a freshman, I set a goal of becoming the number one ranked student in my graduating class. Thus, I immediately recognized the importance of maintaining a strong grade point average and applying myself in the courses that I am enrolled in. Throughout my high school career, I challenged myself to take advanced courses; I did this so I could obtain a more universal education and to build upon my growing grade point average. The effort that I put towards my academics set a very firm foundation for me to build upon throughout the rest of my high school career.
The firm foundation I set during my underclassmen high school years helped me grow as a leader, as I was becoming increasingly more involved in my school and community. Through the Nebraska Leadership Seminar, I discovered an inner drive that has helped me grow as a leader in my community. That inner drive guided me to become involved, as well as hold leadership positions, in various organizations that my high school offers.
I plan on attending law school after obtaining my undergraduate degree, so people question why I am apart of the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) chapter in my school. My school’s HOSA chapter is nationally recognized for our commitment to bettering our community, so I joined the organization to assist with upholding that reputation. Fortunately, HOSA received the Barbara Jean Service Award for our efforts in community service and fundraising activities last year. After being a member of HOSA for one year, I was appointed the Vice President. I believe my involvement in HOSA shows my inner drive for growing intellectually.
As I built upon the foundation that was set, I became more confident and dedicated to my academics and extracurricular activities. Since I am involved in many organizations, there were a lot of leadership positions available for the 2019-2020 organization chapters. Because of my growing confidence, I decided to run for leadership positions in those organizations. I am honored to say that I was chosen to serve as a leader for the majority of those organizations. These leadership positions bear testimony for just how much I care about giving back to those around me.
One leadership experience truly means a lot to me, as it taught me many lessons and it also helped me obtain most of the leadership positions that I hold right now. During my sophomore year, I organized my school’s first faith-based club. I did this because it is important for students to have the opportunity to positively express themselves through their faith. The desire to share my intellectual curiosity proved to be a huge motivator for me throughout the process of organizing the club. After a few discussions with my school’s administrators, the group was set to have its first meeting at the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year. After the first meeting, the group adopted the name ‘Impact’ because of our determination to positively impact our school and community.
The core values that I have set and built upon will help me continue to be a successful leader in diverse communities and organizations. I am committed to providing opportunities to give back and improve the overall community around me. In conclusion, I believe that my high academic rigor, growing leadership skills, and dedication to improving the community around me, prove that I am work to be a positive influence for my school and community.
