My Best Friend and My Best Role Model by Ivy - September 2013 Scholarship Essay

When I was in fourth grade, my soon-to-be best friend moved to Florida and enrolled in my school. Of course, everyone always wants to get to know the new kid, because they are exciting and different. But there was something unique about Courtney that made me want to be her friend even after the shiny new kid effect wore off; she was intelligent, dedicated, and passionate about learning. Even at the young age of nine, I knew that this was the type of person that I wanted to spend my time with. Over the next eight years, Courtney and I took the same advanced courses together, went to marching band practice together, and graduated with IB Diplomas together. Now that we left for different colleges, we rarely see each other anymore. However, I think of Courtney whenever I feel like I am slipping behind in school. Courtney is my academic role model because she always puts schoolwork first. She puts 100% of her effort into every assignment that she completes, every chapter that she studies, and every test that she takes. Her hard work definitely pays off, because not only is she one of the most well-educated and intelligent people that I know, but she is also at the top of her class at her university. Although I aspire to be more like Courtney, I have been known to put off an assignment or two in favor of playing video games. I have been known to not do as well as I wanted on a test because I did not study as hard as I should have. Whenever I have one of these setbacks, or whenever I feel overwhelmed by my classes, I think about Courtney and how she always makes school her first priority. She organizes her time and her workspace so that she can get everything done in an efficient manner, rather than procrastinating and rushing to finish her work in a hectic way.      I still aspire to be like Courtney, because I wish to be successful and happy in everything that I do. I think that if everyone were a little bit more like my role model, then the world would be a beautiful and peaceful place full of hardworking and kind intellectuals.
