Dear teacher... by Isabel - January 2015 Scholarship Essay

Make it an adventure! The teachers I appreciate the most are the ones that come up with crazy activities to help their students remember things. Any subject can be fun if the teacher makes it fun.

In high school I had a teacher who made us watch survival shows and read survival articles while we read Lord of the Flies. You bet I remember that book and you bet I know what kind of shelter I would build if I were stuck on a deserted island. Another unforgettable teacher was my physics professor. Her PowerPoints had animations, videos, sound, and of course, a lot of humor. Her classes were just as interesting as her presentations. We solved mysteries, designed awesome laser images, and we had a big Rube Goldberg machine competition at the end of the year.

I love being in a class where the teacher goes above and beyond to show his/her students how awesome learning can be. I definitely believe that submerging yourself in a subject is the most successful way of learning. I think if a teacher has a passion for his/her job, that passion will show and will eventually rub off on the students. Nothing kills a student’s interest faster than a boring lecture. Students should not be spectators. They should take part in their own learning, and teachers should help them do that.
