Advanced Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a program that prepares and informs students about colleges. AVID has provided a broader perspective of my options for college as well as its other elements to consider before applying. Many other high school students who are not a part of this program may have missed these elements to consider before applying such as city surroundings, common class sizes, clubs, jobs, and fraternities/sororities. If I was not in AVID, I would have applied for colleges without a targeted career goal. AVID brought me towards a career goal as an accountant with a mission to earn a business administration or accounting degree. This program helped me figure out my hobbies and made me realize that the skills from them can be applied to careers in the real world. I did not think that playing brain teaser games such as ‘Sudoku’, puzzles, and ‘Word Search’ contain problem solving skills that are useful in plenty of future careers such as plumbing and engineering that constantly involve that specific skill.
Other than AVID helping mold my future college plans, it has also brought other students together and I made new friends within this program; Others that I did not know attended my high school. It brings us all together as an “AVID Family” and we all had a chance to get to know one another because we have been stuck together since our Freshman year of high school. It is one of the best experiences I have ever had because it brings the true meaning of a sense of community with those who are experiencing the same high school struggles and anxieties as you.
AVID has changed the way I viewed college and it brought me the experience of a community within my own school.
